Beth, your voice is so,strong through your writing, despite the squeaks in ambient air. I often felt voiceless in my family, because “children should be seen and not heard.” Yes, my mom actually said that to us. Being a nurse also felt voiceless, except for the patients, who listened. Healthcare employers do not listen to or value nurses’ voices. Writing, painting, running all became outlets for me. I wrote about my experiences in life and that’s how I overcame voicelessness. I guess I am back to doing that now, but I no longer feel voiceless since I am no longer employed in a profession that does not allow its members to have a voice.
Alene, Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate it. I had no idea how voiceless nurses feel. As an oncology patient, I have always felt that the nurses were my heroes. They work so hard, as you know. I'm sure you have made others' lives so much better, but it sounds like the medical system creates voicelessness among its employees.
We are very blessed to see the fruits of your paint brushes and the insights of your writings, Beth. You've turned the stifling of your voice into works of beauty, and we are the better for it. Thank you for being so open and transparent. Keep up with your vocal exercises as the world needs to hear from you, squeaks and all.
Judy, so eloquently said! I couldn’t agree more. Beth is an incredible inspiration for all of us who face “voicelessness” in so many elements of our lives. I stand with your sentiments here Judy--we need Beth in the world, squeaks and all.
Thank you so much, Gerry, for your kind words. I was so moved by your recently published book of poems. You are an amazing writer, and such a high comment from you is touching.
Gerry, your words are so meaningful to me. I think the world has room for endless voices. People who experience "voicelessness" can sometimes feel compelled to make themselves heard.
Thank you so much, Judy, for your very kind words. I feel blessed to be able to to express myself through art and writing and really glad that people appreciate it. Thanks for your encouragement about doing my vocal exercises. Frankly, I hate doing them, but they are good for me, so I will do them.
