My daughter and I were recently enjoying the sights in downtown Nyack, NY, when we accidentally discovered the Perry Lawson Fine Art gallery.
When we entered the historic building, we were greeted with a beautiful space featuring the Stillness in Focus exhibit. This exhibit displays the works of Jefferson Hayman, who creates prints that look painterly, and the oil paintings of Stephanie Serpick, which happen to look like photos.
The art was breathtaking.
What made the exhibit even better was that Ms. Serpick happened to show up. And we chatted a bit. I told her I was an oil painter, and she warmly spoke to me as a colleague, telling me, “So, you know.” I told her that I did know, but I had so much more to learn. She told me that she also had a lot to learn. I felt comfortable around her and told her how much I loved her artwork, much of it focusing on realistic creations of all kinds of fabrics.
I’ve unsuccessfully attempted oil painting drapes, cloth, and sheets, so I have a bit of fabric envy. But Ms. Serpick has inspired me to try creating fabrics again. That’s what a great artist does – inspires other artists to do their best.
If you are in the Nyack, NY, area, check out the exhibition, which runs until April 28, 2024. To see more of Stephanie Serpick’s work, please visit https://stephanieserpick.com/. To find out more about the Perry Lawson Fine Art gallery, visit here.
Now I will let the art speak for itself.

Beth,
Thank you so much for this. I can't tell you how much it means to me to hear about your experience. It was lovely to meet you and your daughter and talk a bit about the work. And it's true—anyone who creates knows that it's an ongoing learning experience. I think every painting I make teaches me something new. I know it wasn't your initial intention to visit the gallery, but I'm so glad you happened upon it. (And I agree wholeheartedly with Arlene, below, who sees landscapes in the paintings. They definitely are!) Thanks again.
Hi Beth,
How fun that you accidentally discovered the Perry Lawson Fine Art gallery. And then, one of the artists featured in the exhibit showed up! Talk about great timing! Those paintings really do like photos. I'm glad you had such a good experience and felt inspired. Sounds like a good day all around.
